Podgorica Airport (TGD)

Podgorica airport is relatively small but still handles a large number of passengers and flights each year. Keep reading to learn more about the history of the airport, key facts about it and important information about the amenities that are available during your time there.

The first-ever airplane to land in Podgorica touched down in May 1928 on a runway made of grass close to where the city’s train station stands today. Regular passenger flights started in May 1930 using this runway, but they were halted after the Second World War began.

Passenger flights restarted at the runway in April 1947 and then a cargo route launched in 1957. The airport then transferred to its current site in 1961, when its asphalt runway was constructed and a terminal building constructed. The runway was refurbished and upgraded in 1977.

Montenegro’s government became the new owner of the airport in April 2003, taking over from the private company JAT Airways. This resulted in more routes being made available to and from Podgorica Airport, which helped to greatly expand its connections around the world.

In 2006, the government funded and extension renovation of the airport, including a new terminal for passengers, with the old terminal refurbished in 2009 for VIPs and other aviation.
